The Basics

A former hikikomori with a black belt gets a back-stage pass to see a disparate group of fanciful, terrifying, and mundane beings enter his world.  Some are benign, some are hostile.  If he can't befriend them, he fights them as best he can.

Lunatic Summer is a visual novel which blends martial arts action into a dark (horror-tinged) modern-day fantasy story.  The characters are adults (mostly) and it does not take place in a school setting.

Current plans are:
  • Three heroines, each with their own route;
  • Two acts before the story splits off into routes, and two to three acts after;
  • A total length (including all routes/choices/bad ends/etc) of probably under 200,000 words;
  • No graphic sex scenes.
I am currently working on the first draft of the script; as of May 2013, first drafts of the first three acts are finished, along with the fourth act of two routes (approx. 114,800 words).  I'm aiming to have the entire first draft done by the end of this year (though this a very optimistic deadline), at which point I will begin recruiting artists, musicians, etc.

The Premise (more broadly)

There are countless other worlds out there; not out in space, but in other dimensions.  Parallel worlds.

Some of these worlds, such as the one the story takes place in, are as mundane as our own; while the potential for magic is there, it is forgotten or never realized.  In many other worlds, magic was never forgotten.  It supplements or replaces technological development, resulting in everything from worlds of stone age sorcery to worlds of magic-assisted space flight.

A certain person in one of these worlds sought to escape certain death.  To this end, he coerced a top-level magus into crafting a spell that would take him between worlds.

The spell was experimental and rushed; it lacked focus and produced side effects.  It sought other beings seeking escape, no matter which world they came from, and took them to the same world as its intended target.

This world is the one in which our protagonist, Ray, lives.

These beings are caught between worlds, transitioning slowly, visible only to a select few and intangible like holograms.  Their appearance and apparent nonexistence present a problem for Ray.  Why is he the only one who can see them?  Are they truly there?
