Act 1 Synopsis:
Ray arrives at work one morning
to see Mary flying about inside the mall. He is the only person who
can see her or hear her. She is unable to make physical contact with
anyone; she passes through them as if she were a hologram or ghost.
She does not know what is going on any better than Ray does.
Having no place else to go and
no-one else to rely on, she agrees to stay in a spare room in Ray's
home.
However, Ray is not convinced
that there is really an intangible angel that only he can see or hear
-- he begins to doubt his own sanity, believing that he is suffering
from schizophrenic hallucinations. His anxiety runs
out of control.
Regardless of his fears for his
sanity, he still sees what appear to be benign people in desperate
situations who need his help. In order to keep the peace, he invites
the more benign and friendly hallucinations (Sumika and Simone) to
join Mary in his home.
One afternoon at the mall, Ray
and his friend Ashkay are standing in line at the food court. A tall
man brandishes a knife at Ashkay, and Ray tries to protect him, only
to find that he passes through the tall man -- just as he has with
the heroines. Ray escapes to the bathroom and
hides while he endures a panic attack.
Ray had previously made social
plans with Ashkay for the coming Sunday. When they meet, Ashkay
expresses concern and asks Ray what the problem is. Ray has to
decide whether he truly trusts Ashkay with this secret.
